Top End sports chairs feature at Superhero Para Triathlon
The Superhero Para Triathlon has been created to bring people with disabilities and the able-bodied together to compete in relay teams over a number of distances. Set in the beautiful surroundings of Dorney Lake near Windsor in England, the first event was held on 19th August. The day saw many personalities from the disability world present to compete with the event covered by Channel 4. The Triathlon included swimming, hand cycling, wheelchair racing, cycling and running which were often broken up into several waves of competitors to allow for safe transitions between each.
Many of the teams were representing charities, but the afternoon session was set aside for a huge family Triathlon where competitors came dressed as superheroes. It was especially great to see so many children with disabilities get involved and compete with their families, making this a truly inclusive event.
On the day Huw Roderick, the Top End Product Manager from Invacare, supported Quest 88, an Invacare handcycle dealer, to set up a Force 3 handcycle for Frank Gardner, the BBC Security Correspondent. Frank undertook a 10km handcycle race for his team, setting a great pace for his team to follow. In addition, smaller Top End handcycles were provided to a number of children to encourage involvement in the competitions.
