Invacare UK has reinforced its commitment to accessibility by donating a second Storm 4 power wheelchair to Beckside Care Farm in Ashbourne, Derbyshire. This gift ensures continued mobility for visitors with a range of learning disabilities—empowering them to fully participate in therapeutic farming activities across the farm's 25-acre site.
Founded in 2012 by experienced occupational therapist Ann Grange, Beckside Care Farm offers structured, meaningful experiences tailored to each individual. Visitors interact with animals such as alpacas, pygmy goats, and rescue hens, while gaining therapeutic benefits from nature and social interaction.

Research supports the benefits of care farming. Studies show that it improves mental wellbeing, boosts social inclusion, and builds life skills—particularly for those with dementia, autism, or mental ill-health. Beckside also ensures accessibility through facilities for those with hearing loss and communication needs.
Invacare first donated an ex demo, Storm 4 power wheelchair almost 10 years ago, which helped visitors access the farm and its facilities.
Ann described the original Storm 4, as a “game changer” that opened up access to the entire farm for those unsteady on their feet. One user, Peter, was able to remain active in group sessions despite declining mobility, helping with tasks like fence repairs and animal care—activities that rekindled a sense of purpose and camaraderie.
“The Storm 4 made it possible for Peter to continue using lifelong skills safely, under supervision, long after he could not walk independently,” Ann explained.
The newly donated power wheelchair chair ensures that this kind of accessibility continues. Particularly, the Storm 4 allows regular use over outdoor terrain. Ann also emphasized how mobility enables equal access to nature’s therapeutic benefits: “Being non-ambulant shouldn’t be a barrier and Invacare’s donation helps us offer an equitable service to everyone.”
Care Farmer, Becky is particularly looking forward to having the benefit of this donation as it will enable her to work alongside the group, involving her in the day-to-day activities and she can fully experience the positive benefits of interacting with the animals.

Invacare’s continued support directly aligns with Beckside’s mission of using nature-based occupational therapy to enhance wellbeing.

Looking ahead, Ann hopes the new Storm 4 will allow even more visitors to connect with nature, each other, and meaningful activity: “Care farming is a powerful, holistic intervention. With the Storm 4, its benefits remain open to all who need it.”
Ann recently welcomed the Invacare team to Beckside Care Farm to meet with some of the Care Farmers. You can read the full interview here.
