Backing the Game – Supporting Community Rugby with Aber Valley Wolves

Local coach supports community rugby club

We’re proud to share that we’ve recently sponsored new kit for the Aber Valley Wolves Wheelchair Rugby team – a vital step in supporting inclusion and growth in community sport. At the heart of this partnership is one of our own colleagues, Adam, our Audit Manager for Pressure  Area Care products, who has been a dedicated coach with the club for the past four years.

We caught up with Adam recently, to hear more about his journey from player to coach, his commitment to youth development, and the important role local clubs like the Wolves play in the community.

What inspired you to start coaching rugby?

“After playing rugby union for over 30 years, and rugby league for five, stepping away from the sport completely was hard. Fortunately, my youngest son started playing at the age of five and the club needed coaches. I took the relevant courses and stepped in. Coaching keeps me involved in the sport I love and gives me the chance to give back.”

Is inclusion important at Aber Valley Wolves?

“Absolutely. We have a fully inclusive policy – anyone is welcome to give rugby league a try. We run mixed-sex teams from age 8 all the way up to senior level. The launch of our Wheelchair Rugby League team is another huge step in ensuring everyone has the chance to get involved, regardless of ability or background.”

What are the biggest challenges as a youth coach?

“I currently manage and coach the Under 13s team. Over the years, I’ve coached players with learning difficulties, behavioural challenges, and those who may be socially anxious. The key is creating mutual respect – making sure they understand what’s expected of them as players, while I do everything I can to help them grow both on and off the pitch.”

What do you personally get out of coaching?

“Rugby has been a huge part of my life. When I stopped playing, there was a real void. Coaching filled that space – it gives me my ‘rugby fix’ and lets me play a part in developing the next generation of players in a sport I’m passionate about.”

What role does the club play in the wider community?

“Aber Valley Wolves is a pillar in our local area. With over 300 players involved across all age groups, we offer young people the chance to stay active, make friends, and be part of something bigger. For some children, rugby provides a vital outlet and support system.”

What are your hopes for the future?

“This season, I want to help our new players settle in and reach their full potential. We've made it to the grand final three years in a row – I’d love to see us get there again. On a wider level, I hope we can continue to grow the sport in Wales and strengthen our reputation as an inclusive, community-driven club.”

Adam has recently taken on a new role with the East Wales Origin Under 14s, thanks to the success he’s helped achieve at Aber Valley Wolves. His journey is a brilliant example of how sport can create lasting impact – not just for players, but for the people who support and inspire them along the way.

Thank you, Adam for all you do – and good luck to Aber Valley Wolves for the season ahead!
